The clocks include the Barnard Tompion, and other examples by Tompion, Fromanteel, Knibb, Graham and Ellicott. The barometers include fabulous examples by Delander, Quare and Halifax. A very useful reference to affordable Victorian and Edwardian clocks, torsion clocks, electric clocks, alarm clocks, time recorders and many more types of clock. The book is well researched and has useful information about various makers including addresses and dates. The appendices include a reprint of the Hirst Bros. This is an essential book for clock designers, students of horological theory and all those who want to build very accurate pendulum clocks. The papers are grouped under seven headings: Experimental Clocks; Escapement Theory; Error Analysis; Timekeeping Stability; Pendulums and their Suspensions; A Study of the Spiral Hairspring; and W5 for Emulation. (W5 is a very accurate clock, designed and built by Woodward, with a free pendulum. This book contains good photographs of an emulation of W5, and a more detailed explanation than that given in Woodward's book My Own Right Time.)
