O/P. 133 lots, most illustrated in colour. Professor Thomas Engel's collection was mainly pocket watches but this auction also included a few wristwatches, books, horological tools, marine chronometers and several Breguet manuscripts. Pocket and wristwatches by Breguet was one of the collections strengths and perhaps the star of the collection was a one-minute flying tourbillon pocket chronometer made in 1927 by Alfred Helwig. [Antiquorum]: The Longitude at the Eve of the Third Millenium
O/P. A sale of important precision timekeepers - marine chronometers, regulators, watches - and documents relating to the discovery of the longitude. 75 lots all illustrated in colour, the most important being an 8-day marine timekeeper by Henry Sully - probably the third he made and one of only two known to have survived. This item, called Pendule à Levier by Sully, was made in 1724 and is extensively described and illustrated. Other items in the sale included an exceptional chronometer wristwatch by F.P. Journe, a pocket watch by George Daniels, several marine chronometers by Breguet and the first lever watch made by Joseph Emery. Hardback catalogue, very good condition. Appleby (K.): Clockmakers of Cheshire
O/P. 152 pages, 12 colour and 12 b&w plates, 1999. This is the only book about Cheshire makers and the listing by town and village is most useful. The extracts from the Cheshire Sheaf, Chester Chronicle and Chester Courant provide useful information about the makers, which is not easily available elsewhere. This book has become hard to find. A very good clean copy, the dust jacket fairly good but with wear to edges and corners. (Ref: K5197 - F3)

Ashton (T.S.): An Eighteenth Century Industrialist - Peter Stubs of Warrington 1756 - 1806
O/P. 156 pages, frontis., 1st edition, 1939. South-East Lancashire was a centre of the metal trade and Peter Stubs, who is best known as a file maker, was also an innkeeper. The Stubs business purchased cast steel from Sheffield and using a large number of outworkers made files and other hand tools. The tools were sold to customers, including watch and clockmakers, in Britain, Europe and America. A very good copy. (Ref: K2201 - N1)
