Bringing the Work On 1675 to 1680
Martin Ball

O/P. A re-appraisal, based on contemporary evidence, of the part played by Robert Hooke and Thomas Tompion in the development of the English balance spring for watches. The book includes horological references in Hooke's diaries of the period and William Derham's account published in 1696. A fine copy in the original quarter leather binding (leather spine and marbled paper covered boards).

126 pages, illus., number 49 of a limited edition of 50 copies, 1999.

A New Book of Single Cyphers, comprising Six Hundred; Invented & Engraved by Php. Barraud
Philip Barraud

O/P. The first 5 engraved pages are: title page; dedication page to Queen Charlotte (wife of George III); and cyphers CR for Queen Charlotte; GR for George III; and a cypher for the name Barraud. The 600 cyphers (six to a page) are for all single and double letter combinations from A to Z and AA to ZZ, the letters I and U not being used. Each cypher (usually called monograms today) is enclosed in a circle, ideal for engraving on the rear of pocket watch cases. A good copy, the plates generally clean - a few with very minor foxing, now nicely bound in half-leather.

5 engraved preliminary plates, 100 numbered engraved plates of cyphers, second edition, 1805.

The Cyclopędia; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature (a volume of plates)
Abraham Rees

O/P. Plates, Volume II, Basso Relievo to Horology, 1820.
A single volume (only) of about 230 plates from this famous cyclopaedia. The plates include all 50 Horology Plates, as well as plates on Dialling, Drawing Instruments and Engines. The latter section includes Henry Hindley's Cutting Engine and Jesse Ramsden's Dividing Engine. A more detailed list of the plates is on the website. Enthusiasts will be familiar with the poor quality 1970 reprint of the horological sections of the Cyclopędia - the original plates, as here, are much clearer. A very good copy, the plates generally very clean and bright with only minor foxing to a few plates. Now smartly rebound in half-leather.
