O/P. A 16-page illustrated catalogue for a single clock - a magnificent ormolu mounted red turtle-shell grande sonnerie table clock with pull repeat - Thomas Tompion, London number 417. [Sotheby's]: Masterpieces from the Time Museum part 4 Volumes 1, 2 & 3 and slipcase
O/P. The closure of the Time Museum and the dispersal of its collections at Sotheby's in 2004 has left us with 3 excellent and important catalogues as a permanent memorial.
Volume 1: 116 lots, all illustrated in colour. This catalogue of the European clocks and watches includes a wooden longcase regulator by John 'longitude 'Harrison, several watches by Breguet, an early pendulum timepiece by Salomon Coster and a renassance table clock by Hans Gruber.
Volume 2: 196 lots, all illustrated in colour. This catalogue of the chronometers and scientific instruments includes a replica of Harrison's 'H1', Mudge Green, and chronometers by Arnold, Earnshaw, Margetts, Pennington, Kullberg and Loseby. Also in the catalogue are 3 items made by Anthony Randall for the collection plus a chronometer with 4 differential linked movements. The scientific instruments, all related to time, include examples from Persia, the Ottoman Empire, India, Japan and China as well as Europe and America.
Volume 3: 815 lots, all illustrated in colour. This catalogue of the clocks and watches includes many American examples plus the electric timepieces, the wristwatches, a re-construction of the Astrarium built by Giovanni de Dondi and a Shortt Synchronome astronomical regulator.
All 3 volumes are in very good condition and free of annotations, etc. Card covers as issued, housed in original slip case (small split at one corner). [Sale @ New York 13, 14 & 15/10/2004]

[Sotheby's]: The Celebration of the English Watch Parts I, II, II & IV
O/P. The sale, in four parts, of an important collection of fine English pocket watches. The owner's objectives were to form a representative collection of watches from the late sixteenth though to the twentieth century, with the best examples by the best makers and showing their inventions. The earliest watch in the collection is by Nicholas Vallin dating from circa 1600; the most recent a tourbillon by George Daniels made in 1970. The four catalogues contain 97, 77, 61 and 78 items respectively, all with descriptions and excellent photographs. All 4 catalogues in fine condition, card covers.
