This was the first in a series of excellent catalogues of the Greenwich instrument collections, other volumes in stock are on Sundials, Astrolabes, Sextants and Chronometers. A fine copy, with very good dust jacket and very good original slipcase.

Denison (E.B.): Astronomy Without Mathematics
O/P. 193 pages, one folding table, no date (probably 1865). Another book by Edmund Beckett Denison, later Sir Edmund Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, who was one of the 19th century's great horological characters. This is the only non-horological book by this author that I have ever seen. Good copy, re-backed using original boards. (Ref: KW5211 - E5)

O/P. Three books all bound in one volume:
DENISON (E.B.): A Rudimentary Treatise on Clocks and Watch Making: with A Chapter on Church Clocks; and an Account of the Proceedings Respecting the Great Westminster Clock: 279 pages, illustrated, 1855. The book contains lots of information on clocks, watches and chronometers.
ENCYCLODAEDIA BRITANNICA: Clock and Watch Work: 144 pages, 37 figures, 1855. A reprint of the clock & watch work section, and the dipleidoscope section, of the 8th edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica.
TOMLINSON (C.): Rudimentary Treatise on the Construction of Locks: 172 pages, 52 figures, 1853. An interesting treatise on locks from Roman times to the mid-19th century including Bramah, Chubb and American locks.
All three works in very good condition, bound in half Morocco, binding tight but boards and spine a little worn. (Ref: KW5212 - V1)

O/P. The third edition, published by James Knapton, London in 1714. Title page, [ 9p ] preface, [ 5p ] contents list, 140 pages, 3 folding plates and 4 folding tables. A complete copy of this famous work, the pages and plates now very lightly browned with age. Re-backed many years ago using very dark grey leather and the original brown leather covered boards. Leather to all edges chipped and worn, the leather somewhat marked in places. Overall a very good, and complete, example of the third edition.

O/P. xii, 132 pages, 1 folding plate, the 1962 facsimile reprint of a book first published in 1696. The full title is The Artificial Clockmaker. A treatise of Watch, and Clock-Work: Wherein the Art of Calculating Numbers for most sorts of Movements is explained to the capacity of the Unlearned. The most famous of the early English language books on horology. A very good copy, boards a little marked. (Ref: K3816 - E5)

Dibner (B.) & Drake (S.): A Letter from Galileo Galilei (about a Magnetic Water Clock)
O/P. 56 pages, illustrated, 1967. An interesting paper about Galileo's life and especially his problems with the Roman Catholic Church over his belief in the Copernican theory that the earth revolved around the sun; followed by a translation of a letter from Galileo to Pieresc on a magnetic clock. The clock was possibly a clepsydra with the falling water level converted to a rotary motion with a magnetic linkage causing a time indicating dial to rotate in a water bath. O/P. 246 pages, illustrated, 1992. A useful guide to silver marks used by different towns, cities and countries around the world. The book will help identify the town or country of origin of the piece and the period when that mark was used. Other reference books will be needed for makers marks and date code stamps. An interesting little book with chapters on glass manufacture, carpet manufacture, floor-cloth manufacture, piano-forte manufacture and 29 pages on watch and clock manufacture. An interesting historical perspective. Contents good, board becoming detached (held on by clear tape), boards very worn, leather spine marbled boards (worn through). (Ref: K3083 - N1)
