A small 2-day marine chronometer by Litherland Davies & Co, Liverpool c1840

  • A small 2-day marine chronometer in its original mahogany 3-tier box signed on the 3¾-inch silvered dial Litherland Davies & Co,, Liverpool 488/13856.
     
  • The 3-tier mahogany box has flush brass handles, a black felt dust seal and brass corners. The top lid has a brass plaque to the centre and the middle tier has a brass disc (probably later).
     
  • Box size 5½ x 5½ x 6¼ inches high. The chronometer has a modern replacement ratchet winding key.
     
  • The chronometer has gold hands for hours and minutes with blued steel hands for the subsidiary seconds and state of wind dials.
     
  • The chronometer has a helical blued steel balance spring and an Earnshaw type balance.
     
  • This instrument is unusual in that it has brass screws to hold the plates together and uses brass for the click and click spring.
     
  • The brass bowl is marked internally L D & Co 488 and has a narrow brass bezel with convex glass.

The business founded by Peter Litherland was trading as Litherland Davies & Co. by 1816 and was still trading in 1861. The firm is known for its high quality watches and chronometers. The first part of the serial number is a sequential chronometer number, the second part is a sequential number for the total number of timepieces manufactured.
