John Roger Arnold, London c 1840

  • A good walnut bracket clock, with decorative carving, signed on the engraved and gilt dial Arnold 84 Strand. London No. 457.
     
  • The 8-day twin-fusee, 5-pillar movement, has an anchor escapement, strikes the hours on a bell and has a pull repeat feature.
     
  • The backplate is engraved Arnold 84 Strand London 457. The 4¾ inch gilt dial has decorative engraving to the centre and corners, and fleur-de-lis blued steel hands.
     
  • The attractive walnut and walnut veneered case has decorative carving above & below the dial, and to the canted corners either side of the dial. The sides of the case each have a carved decorative mask. Case height 12¼ inches.
     
  • John Roger Arnold continued the famous business founded by his father (John Arnold) and then, in his 60th year, entered into partnership with Edward John Dent from 1830 to 1840.

    When the partnership ended in 1840 Arnold traded on his own at 84 Strand until he died in 1843. Charles Frodsham then bought the business initially trading as Arnold & Frodsham until 1858 when ‘Arnold' was dropped from the business name.

    The serial number of this clock dates it to soon after the Arnold & Dent partnership ended in 1840. The clock has been restored and is guaranteed for 12 months
