NEW. 290 pages, illustrated, 2nd edition, 2008. A brief history of the origins of Smiths Industries and their domestic clock making activities which started in 1931 and ceased in 1979. Smiths owned several companies and trade marks so Smiths English Clocks Ltd, the Enfield Clock Company, 'Astral' and 'Empire' are just a few of the names mentioned. The book also contains a picture gallery of over 2150 different clocks and timers produced by Smiths. A lot of clocks, but they were England's largest manufacturer of clocks at the time! Card covers. NEW. 583 pages, illustrated, only 250 copies printed, 2016. An excellent biographical account of Thomas Cooke and the business he founded up until it became a limited company in 1897. The business is well known for its clocks, telescopes and other scientific instruments, but also owned a small shipyard! This book focuses on turret clocks, with some information on clocks for the Post Office and a few regulators. Also included is an important chapter on turret clockmaker Barnard Cooke (Thomas's brother) who worked in Hull. With dust jacket. (Ref: N4101)

Wayman (M. L.) (editor): The Ferrous Metallurgy of Early Clocks and Watches - Studies in Post Medieval Steel
O/P. 215 pages, b&w illustrations, 2000. This is a most interesting publication by the British Museum. The book explains the development of iron and steel making techniques and the role clockmaking played in that development during the 16th - 19th centuries. Also studied and discussed are the properties of iron & steel in 16th century iron clocks; in clock, watch & chronometer springs; and in watch components. The book has a useful translation of a French paper published in 1780 titled 'The Art of Making Watch Springs' and reproduces the article's 12 plates. A fine copy, card covers.
