Jacques David attended the United States International Exhibition of 1876 held in Philadelphia and was shocked by what he saw. American manufacturers, using modern methods of production had left the Swiss makers well behind in a very competitive industry. The reports were a principal agent in modernising the Swiss industry and shed much light on American methods of the period.
