Author: Peter Brown

152 pages, 119 colour and 71 b&w illustrations

A comprehensive guide to the late Noel Terry's superb collection of English furniture, now housed in Fairfax House. The collection has been described by Christie's as the finest private collection of its period formed in the last fifty years.

The main strengths of the collection are the mid 18thC mahogany pieces by the likes of Chippendale, Ince and Mayhew, John Linnell, John Gordon and William Vile.

An early oak buffet, superb walnut cabinets and a collection of important English Clocks add to the mix, making this not only a useful survey of English furniture 1600 - 1820, but also a fascinating insight into the mind of a 20thC collector.

The clocks desribed and illustrated include bracket clocks by Edward East, Joseph Knibb, Tompion & Banger, and George Graham. The longcase clocks include examples by Edward East, Henry Jones, Thomas Tompion, Daniel Quare, Joseph Windmills, Robert Anderson of Liverpool, and James Boynton of Howden (Yorkshire).

The barometers include a fine ivory stick barometer in the manner of Daniel Quare and a rare wheel barometer by George Halifax of Doncaster.
