Half-title, title, 127 pages, 5 folding plates, London, first and only edition, 1843. The book has a manuscript inscription on the half-title page Mr Charles V. Walker, Editor of the Electrical Magazine, with Mr Bain's Kind Regards. A very good copy with Charles V. Walker's bookplate; the pages clean and bright, the plates dust stained to edges with outer margin worn; the original half-leather binding, with marbled boards, has been carefully re-backed and the original spine laid down; leather rubbed and worn to edges and corners.

An account of the controversy between Alexander Bain and Charles Wheatstone as to who had priority of invention of the electro-magnetic telegraph and the electro-magnetic clock. The book includes a description of Bain's experiments in using the earth as the return conductor, and his discovery that current could be obtained from copper and zinc plates buried in moist ground.
