Walter Archer was working in Stow by 1699 and his descendants continued in Stow until 1824. Other Stow makers worked from 1719 up to about 1939, the practitioners from the mid 19th century onwards being retailers/repairers not 'makers'. The whole being a work very necessary for all that made use of these kind of Movements. This book is important, as it was the first book in the English language devoted to clocks and watches. The full title is Horological Disquisitions Concerning the Nature of Time, and the Reasons why all Days, from Noon to Noon, are not alike Twenty Four Hours long. This is John Smith's second book, it explains the difference between solar time and a 24 hour (mean time) day. The first table shows the difference between a solar day and a 24 hour day for every day of the year, the second table is an equation table arranged so that by setting a clock on ten specified days in the year it will always be within 3¾ minutes of solar time. Smiths owned several companies and trademarks so Smiths English Clocks Ltd, the Enfield Clock Company, 'Astral' and 'Empire' are just a few of the names mentioned. The book also contains a picture gallery of over 2150 different clocks and timers produced by Smiths. A lot of clocks, but they were England's largest manufacturer of clocks at the time!
